Report on Apprenticeship Incentive System

Industry news

The Master Plumbers and Gasfitters Association of WA welcomes the release of the final report for the Strategic Review of the Australian Apprenticeship Incentive System.

The main goal of the Review, conducted by the Australian Government, was to identify ways to reduce Australia's skills shortages. This involved examining key questions including how to increase the apprenticeship completion rate and improve the apprenticeship experience for employers and apprentices.

The Review identified a need to reform the apprenticeship system and provide better targeted incentives to support commencements and completions. It says action is needed to address cost-of-living pressures, the challenges of workplace culture and the specific experiences of particular groups of apprentices.

It also says the current incentive system "is not fit for purpose" and needs to be changed "in a way that aligns with Australia’s economic priorities and social equity objectives."

The report makes 34 recommendations, which are categorised into short-term (within the next 6 to 9 months), medium-term (9 to 18 months) and long-term (more than 18 months).
